The Mexican Economy and the 2012 Elections

Rebecca Ray and Mark Weisbrot

CEPR Reports and Issue Briefs from Center for Economic and Policy Research (CEPR)

Abstract: This paper examines some of the economic issues that could be relevant to Mexico’s July 1st presidential election. These include the short-term impact of the 2008-2009 recession and recovery; the longer-term record of Mexico’s economy since the Partido Acción Nacional (PAN) party took power nearly 12 years ago; and the longer-term trends of economic growth during the last decades of Partido Revolucionario Institucional (PRI) rule.
