Abstract: The eruption of third molars is restricted by limited space and adjacent tissue, and they often fail to fully erupt, leading to their full or partial impaction. The etiology of third molar impaction is multifactorial and it is well established that this impaction is highly associated with periodontal and dental pathology of the adjacent second molar. This is a review of relevant literature to summarize the biological mechanisms of third molars’ impaction and pathologies caused, including dental and periodontal lesions, cysts and tumors, pericoronitis and root resorption, associated with second molars.
