Abstract: In Niger, foreign languages such as English are introduced in the curriculum to give learners more opportunities and a better understanding of the outside world. Drawing on field observation, quantitative and qualitative methods, the study aims to identify the strength and challenges of English language teaching in secondary schools in the city of Zinder (Niger) before it proposes some suggestions. The results show that the majority of English teachers in Zinder do not have the necessary university training in English language education and 31% of them teach because there is no alternative opportunities. In addition, while 64,44% of the respondents acknowledge the importance of English in the world today and the necessity to improve its teaching practice, various partners fail to measure the unintended and unforeseen consequences of the policy which requires a lot of resources.
