Dagbanli-English Bilinguals Radio Presenters Intra-Sentential Code-Switching

Abstract: Code switching (CS) has become an observed phenomenon in language use of bilinguals in multilingual societies. This study examines patterns of intra-sentential code-switching (ISCS) as an element of multilingualism which is reflected in the language use of multilingual Dagbanli-English radio presenters at Tamale, the northern regional capital of Ghana. This study aims to test the Matrix Language Frame (MLF) of the ISCS using Dagbanli-English data. The data were solicited through an ethnographic survey and key informant interviews conducted with multilingual radio presenters who had lived and performed radio work in Tamale for the past five years. The study reveals that the ISCS occurs frequently in the language of radio presenters and they use the ISCS more regularly than inter-sentential code switching (InSCS).
