Chapter 15 in Analysis on Energy Saving Potential in East Asia Region, pp 209-222 from Economic Research Institute for ASEAN and East Asia (ERIA)

Abstract: Singapore is the most industrialized and urbanized country in Southeast Asia. It is totally dependent on oil and natural gas imports to satisfy its energy needs. It has a national energy policy framework to maintain a balance among the policy objectives of economic competitiveness, energy security and environmental sustainability. Singapore has a national target of improving energy intensity by 20 percent by 2020 and by 35 percent by 2030 compared with 2005. It also has a voluntary target of reducing carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions by 7-11 percent below business-as-usual levels in 2020. This will be increased to 16 percent below business-as-usual levels if there is a global agreement on climate change.
