Abstract: LPG consumption in Cambodia has been rapidly increasing, with an annual growth rate of 20% between 2009 and 2019, according to the ERIA research report Cambodia Energy Statistics 2000–2019, published in 2022. In 2019, approximately 30% of LPG usage was for vehicles, while the remaining consumption was in the residential and commercial sectors. However, LPG consumption in urban areas experienced higher growth than in rural areas, as noted in the LPG Supply Master Plan for Cambodia published by ERIA in 2024. In response, the General Department of Petroleum under the Ministry of Mines and Energy developed a plan to promote LPG use in rural areas. ERIA supported this initiative by conducting a sample survey on rural LPG consumption, analysing the rural LPG supply chain, and introducing relevant LPG penetration policies from Indonesia and Thailand as references. Key implications from the study include: a. dispelling fears and fostering a correct understanding of LPG use, b. providing initial financial support from the government, and c. raising awareness of the benefits of LPG.
