Abstract: As the members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) are now committed to a deeper integration process towards an ASEAN Commnity beyond 2015, the need for greater and deeper institutionalisation has become more urgent. While ASEAN recognises the need to strengthen its institutions, as reflected in its c o m m i t m e n t t o u n d e r t a k e g r e a t e r institutionalisation efforts mandated by the ASEAN Charter, the willingness of member states to rely on regional instituions is still circumscribed by strong attachment to the principle of sovereignty and preference for maintaining unity amid regional insititutions without necessarily transforming itself into a supra-national organisation.
