Abstract:
This paper deals with the relative impact of family background and living standards on the educational attainment of Palestinian children in the West Bank and Gaza Strip. Applying an ordered probit model to micro-level data, the paper shows that parent's education and occupations exert decisive impact on the children's educational outcomes. While inter-household variations in standards of living are significant, their effect is superceded by long-term family background variables including household division of labor. We also find asymmetric gender impact of parent?s educational and occupational affiliation on the educational outcomes of Palestinian children.
