¿Exclusión o Discriminación? El Caso de las Personas con Discapacidad en el Mercado Laboral Peruano

S. Maldonado Zambrano

Observatorio de la Economía Latinoamericana, 2005, issue 47

Abstract: This paper aims to estimate the wage gap among non-disabled and disabled people using data from National Household Survey 2003 (Third quarter) carried by Ministry of Labor. We use the methodology suggested by Baldwin and Johnson (1994) based on Reimer”s (1983) proposal which is a variant of the wage decomposition methodology proposed by Oaxaca’s (1973) and Blinder’s (1973) seminal work. The estimates show that the non-explained component of wage decomposition, which is related to wage discrimination, is about 40%. This result suggests that disabled people are, in addition to excluded, discriminated. However, the limited size of the sample and the difficulty to assess the disability impact on productivity make the present estimates just tentative.
