Good governance in de Vlaamse lokale besturen. Een analyse van governance rankings

Abstract: Over the last decades, good governance has become increasingly important. Good public governance has been said to be the key to economic growth, low taxes and a high level of trust in public institutions. Academics and practitioners increasingly attempt to measure the quality of public governance, using different tools (mystery guest, surveys, hard data, etc.). This article describes some of these tools for local authorities in Flanders. The validity and reliability of these measures is assessed using a correlation analysis. Even though the measures try to capture (both common and differing) aspects of good governance, correlations were moderate at best. The article discusses the consequences of this finding for academics and practitioners, and suggests possible solutions for these problems.
