International Journal of Scientific Research in Science and Technology, 2025, vol. 12, issue 4, 127-134

Abstract: A novel and highly selective polyvinyl chloride (PVC) membrane electrode for zinc (II) ions has been developed utilizing a newly synthesized Schiff base, [(E)-2,4-dichloro-6-(1-((4 chlorophenyl) imino) ethyl) phenol], as the ionophore. The sensor displays a near-Nernstian response toward Zn²⁺ ions across a broad concentration range of 1.0 × 10⁻¹ to 5.0 × 10⁻⁷ M, with a detection limit of 7.4 × 10⁻⁸ M. It exhibits a rapid response time of approximately 20 seconds and maintains consistent performance for at least three months without significant drift. The electrode demonstrates excellent selectivity for Zn²⁺ ions over numerous interfering cations and operates effectively within a pH range of 3.0 to 7.5. Furthermore, it has been successfully applied for the direct quantification of Zn²⁺ in aqueous samples and functioned reliably as an indicator electrode in potentiometric titration procedures involving zinc ions.
