International Journal of Scientific Research in Science and Technology, 2026, vol. 13, issue 3, 519-525
Abstract:
Natural photosynthesis converts sunlight, water, and carbon dioxide into biomass with remarkable efficiency, inspiring the development of artificial photosynthetic systems that produce solar fuels. This review examines the fundamental components of artificial photosynthesis—light harvesters, charge separators, and catalysts—and recent advances in each area. Molecular chromophores, semiconductor photoelectrodes, and photocatalysts are discussed alongside water oxidation catalysts, proton reduction catalysts, and CO₂ reduction catalysts. Integrated devices for unassisted water splitting and CO₂ reduction are highlighted, including photoelectrochemical cells and photovoltaic-coupled electrolysers. Industrial scale-up efforts, techno-economic assessments, and remaining challenges—stability, efficiency, and scalability—are addressed.
