Fluoride Exposure and Kidney Functions in Fluorotic Population

Abstract: Fluoride exposure above permissible limit affects the population residing in fluoride endemic area and Dongergaon village, Chandrapur district, Maharashtra (India) is one of them where the fluoride concentration in drinking water ranges from 0.48 to 5.99 mg/L and prevalence of skeletal fluorosis was determined. Therefore, the objective of present study was to elucidate kidney function in a population exposed to high fluoride level (subject group) against low fluoride level (control group). The population was investigated clinically and biochemically in which serum urea and creatinine with urine fluoride were measured. A significant increase in serum urea (23.8 ± 9.51*), serum creatinine (1.2 ± 0.34*) and urine fluoride concentration (2.3 ± 1.26**) was found in the subjects group as compared to control groups. The findings of this study provide evidence that fluoride can have harmful effects on the kidneys.
