The Four-Dimensional Spatial Ecology of Nomad Marine Settlements: Time, Activity, and Space in Torosiaje Bajo Community

Abstract:
Traditional marine architecture is often misanalyzed through static spatial paradigms designed for terrestrial settlements. This study establishes a new conceptual framework by introducing the fourth-dimension time and rhythmic activity into the spatial analysis of the indigenous Bajo community in Torosiaje Laut, Gorontalo, Indonesia. Utilizing a mixed-method approach combining Space-Time Synchronous Mapping, architectural cross-sections, and ethnographic observation, we trace how a dynamic marine environment intersects with daily socio-economic routines. The findings reveal a profound phenomenon of "Spatial Plasticity," where identical physical structures dynamically morph their boundaries, degrees of privacy, and functions across a 24-hour cycle. Driven by tidal rhythms and deeply ingrained fishing behaviors, the spatial ecology of Torosiaje Laut demonstrates that the sustainability of vernaculo-marine architecture relies heavily on temporal flexibility rather than rigid structural permanence. This model offers an alternative planning paradigm for resilient coastal zone management across Southeast Asia.
