No 16, Working papers from Ecological University of Bucharest, Department of Economics
Abstract:
The reserve requirements are playing an important role among the monetary policy instruments. Often, the credit institutions are required to hold minimum reserves in order to be able to answer to their liabilities, these being kept in accounts opened at the national central banks. The frequent changes in the reserve requirements can cause confusion as regards their role and structure. Having as starting point this premise, the paper is aiming at describing the main functions of the reserve requirements mechanism and, based on the compared analysis of the current practices, at identifying a code of good practices as regards the reserve requirements management.
