Abstract:
This article estimates the effects of the Bolsa Família Program (PBF) on the probability of child marriage of its beneficiaries. In particular, we test the hypothesis that the family's financial situation is one of the determinants of the marriage of girls under age of 18. This hypothesis is a result of families' optimization under uncertainty, which we build through a theoretical model. The empirical test uses data from the 2019 Continuous National Household Sample Survey and the Propensity Score Matching method. Our main result is that the PBF reduces the probability of child marriage for girls living in poverty.
