Abstract:
The aim of this article is to empirically analyze the effect of social observatories on corruption. To carry out the empirical analysis, objective measures of corruption are used, built from the audit reports of the Union General Comptroller (UGC) on federal resources transferred to municipalities between 2008 and 2016. The results indicate that the social observatory helps in the fight against corruption, it appears that in the municipalities where there is a social observatory, corruption was lower under different indicators and empirical specifications. Thus, policies to encourage the foundation of social observatories should be considered given their effectiveness in fighting corruption.
