Trends in the structure of federally insured depository institutions, 1984-94

Dean F. Amel

Federal Reserve Bulletin, 1996, vol. 82, issue Jan, 1-15

Abstract: Between 1984 and 1994, the number of federally insured depository institutions declined considerably. Institution failure contributed significantly to the decrease, but an even more important factor was mergers and acquisitions stimulated by relaxed restrictions on geographic expansion. Deposits also became considerably more concentrated at the national and state levels, with larger firms increasing their deposit share relative to smaller firms. However, the concentration of deposits within local banking markets increased only slightly.
