Style and Growth in the Mureş Press of the ’30s

Abstract: The Romanian press of the Mureş county, born only after 1918, can be considered the last conquest of the Transylvanian press. In Târgu-Mureş, this late conquest of the Romanian journalism determined an accelerated process of growth, carried on in two stages: the debut stage, consisting of the first trials and results over the ‘20s, and the growth stage, with fascinating collections and memorable journalistic profiles during the second interwar decade. Inseparable in significance, the two stages represent the beginning period of the Romanian journalism in the Mureş county (1920-1940). This first generation of the local press, sometimes uncertain on the technical aspects of the domain, other times rushing too fast towards recovering the lost time, has practiced the nationalism and the tolerance as it went along, honoring its mission to consecrate the Romanian press writing on a virgin field. This mission was fully accomplished in the middle 30s, during which the local journalism defined its typological features: the polemic style, the nationalist discourse and the dominant cultural component.
