Abstract: The present article focuses on material, human and financial resources in Vâlcea County (Romania) daily press. Most local journalists have to produce news with minimal material facilities. In addition to writing, desktop-publishing, revising or taking pictures, they have to search new advertising clients, many of them politicians and company owners, who are also their sources of information. In this way, journalists round up their revenues with commissions up to 30% of a contract. Because there are no HR departments, the owners are in charge with recruitment and contract negotiation. As a paradox, the lack of experience in the media is one of the hiring conditions, necessary to avoid any journalistic background from other rival newspapers. Managers use “all-purpose” employees, who are, in fact, not specialized at anything. Although they proudly own titles such as editor-in-chief, Vâlcea journalists are in charge of several domains, whose combination would amaze their colleagues in central media: health goes hand in hand with showbiz, politics and sports.
