Abstract:
Together with the new-media revolution and with passing on to the age of web 2.0, media theoreticians invoke the role of the new technologies in democratizing closed societies. The new-media optimists support the role of new-media in liberalizing the authoritarian political regimes, while pessimists claim that new-media supply the users only with the illusion of participation and of a fake political power. The latter believe that new-media cannot fulfill the role that mass-media, traditional journalism, and working in an editorial staff based on deontology norms had in building and sustaining a democratic regime. This study aims to establish the Romanian journalists’ perception regarding their role and the role of traditional mass-media in the process of democratizing the Romanian society. The results of this study are based on the answers to a series of semistructured interviews conducted with well-known journalists, sociologists, specialists in political sciences, and anthropologists, and express the current perception of Romania’s media gate-keepers on the theories concerning the role of journalism in the democratizing process
