Abstract:
This paper argues that a route one might take to explore the concept of public interest in the communication industries is to approach it in terms of a discourse which can be structured by both professionals and organizations active in this sector. In the first part of the paper, I provide an overview on the literature that tackles the connection between professions and public interest, and afterwards I contextualize the discussion in the field of communication industries. Then, I suggest that the relation between professionals involved in the communication industries and organizations should be reframed, to avoid polarization, and I propose to investigate discursively the shaping of public interest in this occupational field.
