Occupational Separation Flows in the Current COPS Models

Working Papers from Gouvernement du Canada - Human Resources Development
Abstract:
The rate at which people leave an occupation is a key determinant of the employment opportunities for newcomers. In fact, separations from an occupation typically create as many opportunities for newcomers as overall economic growth, about 190 thousand per year. Thus, deriving sound estimates of separations is a cretical component of occupational forecasting. Over the 1994-95, the Canadian Occupational Projections System (COPS) underwent a major methodological enhancement. The Treatment of separations has changes drastically. Not only is the data collected in a different manner, but more sophisticated techniques are used in the projections. The purpose of this paper is to review the results of this revision.
