Abstract: Lakes and reservoirs, which are key components of the world's water resources, are under serious threat(disturbances in the watersheds, pollution, overfishing, introduction of exotic species, diversions, and lake reclamation are all taking a toll. This report describes the special challenges of managing these valuable resources. It proposes policies and actions to incorporate the management of lakes and reservoirs in development planning through measures such as comprehensive water resources planning. The paper also describes the World Bank's activities in protecting this sector.
