Abstract: With the increasing demand for innovation in the automotive industry, understanding the innovation parameters and their relationship has become important. Researchers have discussed such parameters, often in isolation, and often the comprehensiveness of the complexity of innovation is based on a particular situation. Therefore, the focus of this paper is to provide a comprehensive understanding of research perspectives on innovation in the automotive industry. This paper shows that the innovation level of automotive companies differs based on their core business and often on the resources available. The parameters for innovation in terms of its inputs and outputs, the metrics on innovation within automotive firms, and innovation policies vary across companies based on their organizational culture and business environment, particularly regarding innovation types and contexts such as products, processes, and positioning.
