Abstract:
I discuss some of the main obstacles to obtaining a precise estimate of the distribution of wealth using tabulated tax data of Receita Federal do Brasil. These obstacles include the impossibility of individualizing the wealth of couples, the lag in nominal values declared, reporting problems, wealth reported as belonging to corporations and potential responses to changes in tax laws. I conclude that wealth in Brazil is extremely concentrated, but it is not possible to determine exactly how concentrated using the information currently available.
