Abstract: The articles and comments published in this special issue of the Journal of Macroeconomics validate the relevance of these words and the fruitfulness of the new theories and tools to account for real-world historical macroeconomic developments. They also offer a comprehensive account of the most advanced research in today historical macroeconomics. By properly combining economic theory, statistics and econometrics within an explicitly historical setting, they illustrate (in extension to previous research – see, for example, Calomiris and Hanes, 1995, Hendry, 2005, Valadkhani, 2004, etc.) what historical macroeconomics can offer to macroeconomic theorists: besides the mere identification of the major stylized facts and developments observed during the last centuries, a thorough scientific explanation of their inner economic logic.
