Abstract:
In many developed countries, the number of senior workers over 60 is increasing rapidly. Even after retiring, new retirees want to remain active as well as earn supplemental income through part-time jobs. One solution is self-employment. This could be especially popular in rural areas where it is more difficult to obtain jobs that suit retirees' needs. This article analyzes the phenomena of business creations by senior citizens in the United States, with a focus on self-employed women in rural areas. The US data show that rural women are more likely to create their own business than are those in urban areas.
