Abstract:
This paper questions the appropriateness of using the term "social economy" to refer to organizations that are distinct in many respects. It shows that these initiatives are started and invested in by individuals from diverse backgrounds, seeking alterna- tive areas for social activism. Yet not all of them have the same political aims. An analysis of the economic ideas expressed in their networks sheds light on differ- ences in dominant economic ideas and practices. Their choices of quality assurance mechanisms (third-party certification, charter, participatory system) reveals the divisions within these collectives, one that challenges the myth of the sector's unity.
