Abstract: Research on focal firms is well known in network literature as well as in literature on supply chain management. Nevertheless, the subject of focal companies does not have the same centrality in the specific context of intermediation. In this chapter we question the possibility that the wholesaler can be considered as the focal company in the Supply Chain. Academic literature highlights that the role of wholesalers still remain limited/ restricted to the traditional field of activities. So we propose the concept of "Allegory of the Cave" of Plato to explain this confinement.
