Abstract: The European Framework programme for research and technical development offers a fertile ground to investigate the question of human capital. Since 1984 this framework programme has brought a renewal of the ways to manage public research and, by consequence, a reconsideration of human resources within funded projects. In the field of human capital theory, researchers can consider coordination of European research project as an investment likely to benefit their career through training, professionalization, capitalization and networking which their participation allows. From the analysis of funding schemes, this contribution exposes the contrasted ways that researchers perceive this human capital investment. Underlining three FP 7 specific funding schemes which draw very differentiated types of perceptions of human resources (Collaborative project, European Research Council, Marie Curie Action) this article suggests a more subtle characterization of the roles of researchers. Finally, in reference to these three cases, the contribution presents some concepts which can be used to supersede the classical approach to human capital, to suggest alternative approaches (Economics of singularities, capabilities, life-cycle hypothesis).
