Abstract:
Present Conclusions of Research Regarding the Function of Conseiller Principal d'Education. The position known as "conseiller principal d'éducation" or CPE officially appeared in the French school world in 1970; its job definition was brought up to date in 1982, to embed the role fully in school life and have its holders participate fully in the establishment of their school's policies. Scientific research into this function and its evolution shows it still suffers from an identity issue, torn between its ever present and not very well accepted past and its rather vague professional prospects, which could go in the direction of management and organisational responsibilities. The position also puts in question the division of labour within French secondary schools.
