Abstract: African companies are generally presented in the literature as being less efficient. Thus, several researchers have been interested in researching the causes of poor performance of these companies. Two main theses are culturalism and institutionalism. The first blames the indiscriminate transfer of Western management methods in Africa and the misdeeds of African culture. While the second blames the weakness of African institutions. Based on the interviews conducted with some employees of private companies in Kinshasa, this article shows that apart from the culturalist and institutionalist causes already mentioned in the literature, there are also other causes related to the social of the employees and to the working conditions that exist. would have a negative impact on the performance of African companies in general, and Congolese companies in particular.
