Abstract: For more than a decade, Western economies have been facing a deep recession which has had a significant impact in recent years on local governments' finances. In this context, efficiency improvement in service delivery is a critical issue for these organizations in order to restore their fiscal health. While many researches highlight the importance of efficiency improvement to cope with financial constraints, few of them have sought to identify concrete actions used to improve local public services efficiency. The aim of this research is to provide answers to this question by analyzing the efficiency improvement actions undertaken in 17 French local governments. Several approaches in five local public services will be presented. These approaches will lead us to identify six categories of actions used to increase efficiency. Based on these results, we will suggest four recommendations to improve local public services efficiency.
