Abstract:
Legitimacy and legitimation strategies of consumer organizations in the current consumerist landscape The role of non-profit consumer protection organizations, which have been key players historically,, has weake- ned over the past several years. Legitimizing their position within the public arena is a major issue in terms of consumer protection in the marketplace. The aim of this paper is to identify the legitimization strategies that can help them do so. A qualitative study helps us to analyze their legitimacy through the representations and practices of 51 respondents when trying to inform and defend themselves in litigation cases. Four strategies to legitimize their activity are presented, taking into account the risks inherent in their implementation: increasing consumer organization awareness, targeting priority populations, building specific expertise, and promoting class actions.
