Abstract: Over the past decade, many countries have developed a legal framework for the social and solidarity economy (SSE). Interest in the sector has also been growing among international organizations, including the United Nations. The authors compare SSE legislation around the world and show that the terms used for describing the sector, the main principles, the organizational forms, and the institutionalization processes vary according to the economic, social, cultural, and political contexts of the countries concerned. Nevertheless, there are many points in common and a global legal culture of the SSE and the SSE enterprise appears to be emerging.
