Abstract:
In late 2018, the Basque Country's eusko became the top local currency in Europe. Run by the non-profit organisation Euskal Moneta (EM), this initiative aims to make the economy local again, defend and promote the Basque language, strengthen environmental and solidarity practices and revive social ties. Given these ambitions, the article examines the ability of the eusko to act as a tool for reviving citizen and public action. The author shows how EM has brought changes to the management of local public policy by fostering a debate on how a localised economic policy canbe developed democratically and the measures for implementing this policy. This work makes a contribution to our understanding of how private actors can revive citizen and public action.
