Abstract:
This article aims to identify the obstacles to the establish- ment of the functional economy. According to the literature, two alternatives are available to companies wishing to adopt the functional economy: adapt their current business model or create a new one (Mont, 2002). In both cases, companies that choose to adopt the feature-based econo- my face the challenge of identifying and making the chang- es required for their business model (Meier and Massberg, 2004). Based on a survey (composed of open questions), conducted with 110 leaders of the appliance sector, we identified 3 types of barriers to the functional economy which are: the lack of success stories for companies that have already implemented the functional economy, the high costs associated with the introduction of the function- al economy, lack of business processes, necessary for the feature-based economy to effectively utilize existing data and technologies. It is important to note that the success of the functional economy is related above all to its acceptance by consum- ers; which is far from the case today.
