Abstract:
Excavations carried-out on the outskirts of an ancient settlement near the modern town of Banville (Calvados, F) have borne the discovery of a hoard of 312 denarii and one antoninianus, dating from the 1st to the 3rd centuries. The coins had been contained in two leather purses which had been held together by a binding of vegetable material(s). This (double) hoard was the subject of an excavation and laboratory study which provides interesting insight into the formation of the whole. The latest coin discovered is a denarius of the emperor Balbinus (238 CE). A detailed examination, however, of the different numismatic sub-sets identified during excavation present possible different termini for the deposit. This makes the Banville hoard a fluid assembly, the result of an accumulation of coins spread over the decade between 220 and 230 CE. We will also take the opportunity to discuss the circulation of the denarius in the provinces of northern Gaul.
