Abstract: Since the beginning of February 1962, an economic, commercial and financial embargo has been put in place by the United States against Cuba, in retaliation for the expropriation and nationalisation of land belonging to American companies. This economic war is particularly difficult for Cubans to live with on a daily basis. Countries wishing to trade with Cuba are subject to US extraterritorial laws. Sanctions can be very heavy and are at the discretion of the US administration alone. This embargo has developed as a blockade, actively contributing to both the island's underdevelopment and the external challenge to the Castro regime. This history is beginning to drag on, with both the UN and the European Union opposing this action, but hopes for reconciliation and the lifting of US sanctions against Cuba depend fundamentally on the electoral weight of Cuban and Latin American exiles.
