Abstract: This article offers a historical perspective on the construction of rural spaces as tourism spaces in France, tracing the gradual transformation of the countryside from an area long peripheral to tourism practices into a space associated with contemporary expectations of nature, reconnection with oneself, and experience. The analysis examines changing representations of nature, landscape, and heritage, as well as the diversification of practices and forms of rural tourism. It highlights the heterogeneity of rural spaces and the difficulty of defining them solely according to geographical or institutional criteria. Rural tourism thus appears as a construction largely shaped by imaginaries, landscape representations, and sensory and affective values, including naturalness, authenticity, escape, tranquillity, freedom, and sociability. The article nevertheless highlights the paradoxes underlying these expectations: the search for nature alongside the need for infrastructure, the desire for disconnection alongside the need for connectivity, and resource preservation alongside tourist visitation. It therefore questions the conditions for tourism development capable of reconciling attractiveness, local uses, heritage, and the preservation of rural resources.
