Abstract:
Economists have a duty to study military spending, which provides a public service, that of national security. The question is what are the costs of the defense effort, what are the determinants of military spending, what is the choice between butter and cannon, the question of national arms production, military research and development and its influence on civilian technologies or the famous "bang for a buck", which defense is the most efficient in the strategic choices to be made. Increased military spending may promote economic growth, but it is less effective than other forms of government spending for economic development.
