Abstract: The management of the domestic public debt is likely to have a positive impact on the financial development of low and middle income countries, even if some adverse effects are also identified in the literature. We test the relationship between domestic public debt and financial development in the case of two Mediterranean countries, Tunisia and Lebanon, using a Granger causality approach. In the case of Lebanon, no significant impact has been found. In the case of Tunisia, some evidence of a causal relationship between domestic debt and financial development has been found.
