Abstract:
This article discusses the capacity of fablabs to represent an alternative to modes of mass production, in particular by analysing their practices regarding Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It is based on a case study of French fablabs comprising 4 sessions of observation and 15 semi-structured interviews conducted in 2020. The framework of analysis adopts the multi-level perspective (Geels & Schot, 2007), and considers fablabs as "niches" having the potential to transform the dominant socio-technical regime enabling to produce goods and services (mass production), which can be seen as a "meta-regime" (Schot & Laur, 2018, p. 1054). Two main questions are addressed: (1) What are the sustainability practices of fablabs? (2) To what extent can these practices enable fablabs to disrupt the mass production regime?
