Abstract:
The Saudi capital was chosen this Tuesday to host the prestigious 2030 Universal - world Expo, well ahead of its South Korean rivals Busan and Italian Rome in the first round of voting. The three cities prided themselves on carrying out green projects with high technological value. Favorite city, Riyadh won by 119 votes, against 29 for Busan, and 17 for Rome. Without abstention. That is to say easily two thirds of the 165 votes required, according to the results of the BIE (Bureau international des Expositions). "A different future", "Climate action", "Prosperity for all" For the Saudi crown prince, Mohammed Ben Salman, it is a consecration. MBS spared no effort to win this global event. We remember his visit to Paris to lobby foreign leaders. The World expo in Riyadh will coincide with the end of its 2030 vision, a vast modernization plan for the kingdom which wishes to move away from all oil. "The World expos regain legitimacy" For six months, Riyadh will welcome pavilions from around the world, visitors and political delegations from each country. Unlike the Olympic Games which last 15 days (one month with the Paralympic Games) and take place "with tensions" in a world metropolis. If the institution experienced a period of lows, particularly in the 1980s, with questions about the sustainability of the World expo model, it appears that it was able to adapt, according to the geographer specializing in tourism Patrice Ballester . According to him, it has taken the turn of digitalization and globalization, and has established itself on the international scene to the point of becoming "the number 1 event". Even ahead of the Football World Cups or the Olympics, he says. It is true that in the space of a few days, the French capital, for example, received a visit on this subject last June from Mohammed ben Salman, South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol and the President of the Italian Council Giorgia Meloni – for his first official trip to France. Initiated more than one hundred and seventy years ago, the cycle, every five years, and the economic power and influence of world expos are relaunched.
