Ecosystem Embeddedness by Female Refugee Social Entrepreneurs in France

Abstract: Refugee entrepreneurship presents a significant challenge with numerous untapped opportunities. This research aims to contribute to discussions on co-designing and reconfiguring entrepreneurial ecosystems to include underrepresented groups by investigating the ecosystem embeddedness of female refugee social entrepreneurs (FRSE) in France and its influence on institutional barriers. Based on 46 interviews with FRSE and service providers, and grounded in a mixed embeddedness framework and social capital approach, the study reveals that FRSE require access to institutional legal support, inter- and intraecosystem networks, financing, public support structures, regional support programs, and inclusive support initiatives. By conceptualizing a sustainable and inclusive entrepreneurial ecosystem, this research proposes an integrative model to support their success.
