The strengths of worker cooperatives in innovation processes: A way to find the “truth” of the firm

Abstract: Economists generally regard workers' cooperatives as inefficient in terms of their financial performance and innovative capacity. Based on empirical studies that refute this assertion, this chapter explores explanations for the potential innovative capacities of this type of firm. To do so, we need to move away from the purely financial determinants of innovation and integrate the processes of creativity and collective intelligence. We must also move away from a narrow conception of innovation, opening it up to organizational and social innovations. Under these conditions, workers' cooperatives could even provide a model for innovative firms.
