Abstract:
Drawing on the framework of job crafting, this article examines how individuals working in a ‘dirty work' context construct their relationship with their work in order to create meaning and reshape the narrative of what they do and who they are. The research, carried out within an industrial cleaning company, combines semi-structured interviews and phases of participant observation made possible by one of the authors working as a cleaner. The results highlight particularly active job crafting processes through which cleaners strive to restore meaning to their work and to free themselves from the stigma to which they are exposed.
