Abstract:
In the context of the current environmental and social emergency, higher education institutions are being called upon to play a major role in promoting and instilling the principles of sustainability. This qualitative study explores the institutional work carried out within 14 French higher education institutions who obtained the DD&RS label, in order to understand the mechanisms of institutionalizing these principles. Through interviews, several dimensions were explored including the organization of the University Social Responsibility (USR) approach, its appropriation by users, the involvement of stakeholders, as well as the obstacles and resistances encountered. The results, analyzed through the theoretical framework of Cloutier et al. (2016), highlight four forms of institutional work (structural, conceptual, operational, and relational) and reveal the existence of four additional forms specific to the institutionalization of USR (emotional, promotional, supportive, and evaluative). This research enriches our understanding of the adoption and implementation of sustainability in higher education, and offers insights for a better integration of these principles in educational institutions.
