Abstract: This article is based on researches conducted in Mulhouse, France, between 2015 and 2018 on food insecurity. In order to better understand the relationship to food for vulnerable groups, some sixty semi-directive interviews were conducted with elderly people and single-parent families receiving food aid, supplemented by interviews with actors from organizations in this sector. Analysis of the results shows that food aid, while providing people with concrete responses, particularly material, can sometimes be a source of suffering. Indeed, the process of requesting aid as well as the interactions with food aid actors can be experienced as a process of designation and objectification that tends to reduce people to a role of assisted. In doing so, these processes erode people's resources and capacities. On the contrary, food and food aid practices can be seen as levers for restoring social ties, and they represent a real issue of social recognition for these groups.
